What Is Wings for Autism?

If you're traveling by air with an autistic or an individual with a hidden disability, experiencing the airport can be a lot.

There are bright lights, loud announcements, crowds, security screening, long waits, unfamiliar surroundings, and plenty of unexpected moments. For some travelers, these things can make air travel feel overwhelming before the trip even begins.

That's where Wings for Autism can help.

What Is Wings for Autism?

Wings for Autism is an airport rehearsal program created to help individuals with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), along with their families, become more comfortable with the air travel process.

The program is part of The Arc's national travel initiative. Wings events give participants the opportunity to practice important parts of the airport experience in a controlled environment before taking an actual flight.

The goal isn't to take off and go somewhere.

It's to practice the journey before the real trip.

Wings for Autism events are created through collaboration between local Arc chapters, airports, airlines, TSA personnel, and other community partners. The program also gives aviation professionals an opportunity to learn how to better support travelers with disabilities.

What Happens During a Wings for Autism Event?

One of the things I love about the Wings program is that it gives travelers an opportunity to actually experience many of the steps involved in flying.

During a Wings event, participants may:

Check in and receive a boarding pass

Participants practice the process of arriving at the airport and checking in for their flight.

Go through TSA security

This allows travelers to experience the security checkpoint and become more familiar with what happens during screening.

Wait at the gate

Waiting is a big part of air travel. Practicing this part of the experience can help travelers understand what to expect before an actual trip.

Board an airplane

Participants board an aircraft—but the plane does not take off.

The Arc also notes that Wings events can include information about aircraft features and in-flight safety procedures.

That means the experience isn't simply about getting through the airport. It's about becoming familiar with the entire process.

Who Can Benefit From Wings for Autism?

he program is designed to support individuals with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

That could include a child, teenager, or adult traveler.

It may be especially helpful for someone who:

  • Has never flown before

  • Hasn't flown in a long time

  • Finds airports overwhelming

  • Benefits from practicing new experiences

  • Has concerns about TSA screening

  • Needs additional preparation before a major trip

  • Has anxiety about unfamiliar environments or changes in routine

Every traveler is different, and a rehearsal won't eliminate every challenge.  But knowing what to expect can be a valuable part of a larger travel plan.

How Do I Find a Wings for Autism Event?

Wings for Autism events are held at participating airports throughout the country, and new locations and dates are announced throughout the year.

But this is also where I can help.

If you would like to participate in a Wings for Autism event, let me know! I can look for upcoming Wings for Autism events and help you find the airport that is closest to you.

If you're ready to start planning a vacation that works for your travel party, I'd love to help.
